From Sighisoara to Sinca Veche
08 februarie 2011
Without
fail, each morning we've been in Romania we always see old ladies out and about
doing hard manual labor - carrying buckets, digging ditches, that sort of
thing. Romania is really a farmer's country. The air smells of loamy, most,
fertile soil, and there's always lots of farmers out in the field doing hard
work by hand. Tractor schmacktor, let's use the horses and our hands!
Forgot to mention this, but we think it deserves mentioning as it's pretty ridiculous: in Cluj-Napoca we bought what we thought was a roll of toilet paper, but turned out to be crepe paper. We had a good laugh over that one, until the next day, when we saw that that's what people really do use here as toilet paper. Hmm. In the immortal words of Carl Spackler, "it's a little harsh".
Also, for breakfast on the morning that we left Cluj-Napoca, we decided to veer from the oatmeal path (but not too far) and eat muesli mixed with yogurt. Sounded good, except that we accidentally bought sour cream instead of yogurt. D'oh! Yes, the language has been a challenge. You know you're in deep eastern Europe when most foods have the ingredients listed in eight languages, none of which are English. Anyhoo, of course we ate the sour cream. What were we supposed to do? Well, now we know. Or do we ...?
We ate lunch today in Rupea, a cute little town. We had bananas, plums, bread, cucumber cream cheese, and paprika chips. Dave was so excited about the plums he bought at the fruit market that he accidentally swallowed a pit. So, now what?
After that big lunch, feeling a bit groggy, we had the pleasure of riding directly into the sun for 23km, under a cloudless sky. Ow.
Perhaps because he was a bit disoriented from the brutal sun, Dave dropped his favorite pen while attempting to jot a note down while riding, and rode right over it. Don't worry, it still works, but it was really funny how it dropped straight down and was promptly run over by both his bike's rear wheel and The Pig's wheel.
We didn't have any major climbs today, which is sorta odd since we're surrounded by the Carpathian mountains. At about 5pm, feeling that we'd ridden enough for the day, we found a great place to camp, on a grassy hilltop with huge views all around.
